If you're yearning to find out what true links golf is all about, then pay a visit to The Links Kennedy Bay. Located close to the pretty seaside town of Rockingham on the way to Mandurah, Kennedy Bay is just a leisurely 40-minute drive from Perth via the south-bound Kwinana Freeway. 1991 British Open champion Ian Baker-Finch collaborated with architects Michael Coate and Roger Mackay to route 18 exquisite holes between 10,000-year old sand dunes and natural bushland. The par 72, 6420-metre course has won numerous accolades since it opened in 1999, including Australia's Number One Public Access Course 2003 & 2004 in the Golf Course Guide. Undulating fairways thread their way through indigenous bushland shrubbery, past no less than 115 treacherous pot bunkers, leading to huge, well-defined greensites. Every now and again, tantalizing views of the deep blue waters of the Indian Ocean appear on the horizon. Substitute Aussie bush with Scottish gorse and Kennedy Bay would look as Scottish as kilts and haggis. Kennedy Bay not only looks like a links course but plays like one as well. The Windsor Green fairways are hard and bouncy, thus allowing low, running shots that are an integral part of links golf. Indeed, unless you have to fly a bunker or two, staying low at Kennedy Bay is a wise way to play to minimize the influence of the ever-present winds on distance and direction. The Bent greens are excellent putting surfaces and feature steep slopes and deep swales that can easily induce three-putts, especially when your approach finds the wrong, higher side of the green relative to the pin. It's difficult to pick stand-out holes at Kennedy Bay, but the par five 4th deserves special mention not only as the longest hole on the course but also for its replica of the infamous Hell's Bunker at the 14th hole of the Old Course, St Andrews. For a taste of true links golf, whet your appetite with The Links Kennedy Bay.
